Passport Validity Checker Tool
Is Your Passport Actually Ready for Travel?
A surprising number of people get to the airport and only then realise their passport isn’t going to cut it. Don’t be one of them.
The post-Brexit bit that catches people out
Since leaving the EU, British travellers are treated as third-country nationals. That means two things matter now, not just the expiry date.
Your passport needs to have been issued within the last 10 years, and it needs at least 3 months’ validity left when you leave your destination. Most travel advisors will tell you to aim for 6 months, just to be safe. If you renewed your passport early at some point, the issue date is the one to watch. The expiry might look fine, but the passport could already be over 10 years old.
It’s not just Europe
Countries outside the EU have their own rules. Egypt, for example, wants 6 months’ validity from the date you arrive. Always check the FCDO travel advice for wherever you’re going, before you book, not the week before you fly.
A damaged passport is a refused boarding
Tears, missing pages, a cover that’s falling apart. Border staff and airlines can and do turn people away for this. Keep it in a cover, and if it’s looking rough, just renew it.
When to renew
The passport office gets slammed in the first few months of the year. If yours is coming up for renewal, don’t wait. Apply about 9 months before it expires and you’ll avoid the rush entirely.
The EES is coming
The EU’s new Entry/Exit System is expected to launch in 2025. It replaces passport stamping with biometric data, fingerprints and facial scans, for non-EU travellers. It’s worth knowing about before it catches you off guard at the border.
FAQ
How much validity do I actually need for EU travel? Technically 3 months beyond your departure date, but aim for 6 to be safe.
Does the 10-year rule apply to all passports? Yes, for EU and Schengen entry as a UK citizen, your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years.
When’s the best time to renew? At least 9 months before expiry, and avoid January to March if you can.
What if my passport is damaged? Renew it. Don’t risk it.
None of this is complicated, it just requires checking before you assume everything’s fine. Five minutes now saves a genuinely awful day later.
