Most people go home with nothing worse than a mild sunburn and a stray sand fly bite. Serious trouble is rare, the main risk is someone lifting your phone or wallet when you’re relaxed and not really watching your bag. Busy promenades, markets, and nightlife areas are where that happens.
The other thing to respect is nature; Teide and the mountain roads look friendly but weather can shift and paths aren’t always forgiving in flimsy sandals. If you use the hotel safe, don’t get absolutely wrecked and lost at 3am, and treat hiking like actual hiking rather than a stroll to the shops, you’ll feel perfectly comfortable.
