It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. If you stay in a big four or five star place in Costa Adeje, drink cocktails on the seafront and eat steak every night, you’ll feel the prices. If you base yourself somewhere quieter or in the north and eat where the locals eat, you suddenly realise you can get decent wine and proper food without feeling like you’re being rinsed.
Supermarkets are good for keeping costs sane, especially if you don’t mind picnics on the beach or balcony dinners. Excursions, theme parks and boat trips are where the bill grows. If you treat those as occasional treats, Tenerife works fine on a mid range budget.
