For most visitors, Costa Adeje is the easiest answer. It has good beaches, plenty of places to eat, and a calmer feel than some of the older resort strips.
Los Cristianos is handy for ferries and has a more lived in feel, while Playa de las Américas is livelier and suits people who want nightlife. If you prefer a less touristy base, Puerto de la Cruz in the north is a good choice.
