Everyone seems to think moving to Tenerife will sort their life out. The weather’s great and the pace is slow, so what could go wrong? But the island doesn’t fix broken people. It just gives their mess better lighting.
The people who make it here didn’t succeed because they escaped the rat race or found some perfect work/life balance under a palm tree. They turned up with real skills, some money in the bank, and enough emotional maturity to cope with loneliness, bureaucracy that makes you want to scream, and the grim moment you realise sunshine doesn’t cure depression and can’t stand in for people who actually care about you.
The ones who fail usually weren’t beaten by island life. They were already struggling back home and figured a new view would turn them into someone else.
Tenerife isn’t a reset button. It magnifies what’s already there. If you were drifting in Manchester, you’ll drift in Los Cristianos too, only now you’re skint and sunburned, and your “digital nomad journey” turns out to be unemployment with a tan.
The expats who thrive weren’t running away from something. They were heading toward a specific goal, with the money and the grit to build it. The island won’t change you. It just shows you who you were all along.
